We are the local chapter of the New York Mental Health Counselors Association (NYMHCA) for the New York City area. NYMHCA is the advocacy organization representing the clinical counselors of New York State. Our continuing role is to protect and enhance the rights of counselors to practice our profession.

NYMHCA was instrumental in the passage of the legislation that created the Mental Health Counselor license (LMHC) in New York State in 2002. NYMHCA continues to advocate on behalf of the mental health counseling profession and to raise awareness of mental health for the public and for healthcare consumers. NYMHCA has nine regional chapters (including ours) throughout New York State and represents: LMHCs (Licensed Mental Health Counselors) in agencies, clinics, hospitals, and private practice; limited permit holders who are working to fulfill their hours for licensure; recent graduates searching for settings to acquire their licensure-qualifying hours; and graduate students in mental health counseling programs.

Licensed Mental Health Counselors, counselors in training, and other mental health professionals who work or intend to work in clinical settings and/or private practice are welcome.  The only requirement for joining this chapter is to be a member in good standing of the New York Mental Health Counselors Association.  We are committed to the advancement and well being of our professional community.
